School Board Elections
According to Arkansas Code Ann. 6-13-631, from an approved Arkansas Department of Education Commissioner's Memo dated June 6, 2012, "it is our understanding that if a district is required to create or redraw zones based on the 2010 Census data, all of the board positions both zoned and at large shall be up for election at the annual school board election on September 18, 2012, regardless of the remaining term length of the current school board members."
The Waldron School District began this process by hiring Arkansas Geographic Consulting to redraw the zones due to the fact that the 2010 Census minority population exceeded the 10% requirement per Arkansas Department of Education requirement. Zones were redrawn and filed with the county clerk's office. This is a new requirement throughout the entire state of Arkansas for school districts to observe and respond accordingly.
If you are interested in running for one of the five open school board positions, please pick up your petition from the Scott County Clerk's office. The petition must have twenty-five registered voters' signatures residing in the zone of which one is seeking and must be filed by noon on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at the clerk's office. If you have any questions or would like to see a copy of the school zone map, please contact the central office at 479-637-3179 or come by and visit with us.
